Updated: Guide for Biodiversity Management in Aggregate Operations

The Guide for Biodiversity Management in Aggregate Operations provides practical guidance for companies, public administrations, and organizations aiming to integrate biodiversity protection across all phases of extraction, from exploration to closure. It also includes examples of good practices, regulatory references, and real case studies that highlight the active role of quarries and gravel pits in conserving natural ecosystems.

The publication emphasizes the importance of training and engaging workers, as well as fostering collaboration between the extractive industry and environmental organizations. It also features examples recognized in the Sustainable Development Awards in the biodiversity category, whose 2025 edition was presented during the VII National Aggregates Congress held in Córdoba (Spain).

The document has been updated through the ROTATE project — funded by the European Commission and coordinated by ANEFA — together with the Spanish Federation of Aggregates (FdA). This new edition reinforces the sector’s strong commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship, demonstrating that extractive activity can coexist with, and even enhance, biodiversity when managed responsibly.
