What is Rotate?
ROTATE is a EU-funded project that aims to provide environmental solutions that will contribute to facilitate the generation of synergies between diverse industrial sectors related to mining and quarrying. ROTATE goals are the following: to boost efficiency in extractive sites, enhance circularity and waste valorisation, develop sustainable processes along the mining and quarrying productive chain, and improve social awareness about the importance of this strategic sector and its commitment to sustainability. In fulfilling these goals, ROTATE also seeks to ensure a sustainable supply of critical raw materials crucial for the EU industry.
ROTATE is part of Horizon Europe, the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation. It tackles climate change, helps to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and boosts the EU’s competitiveness and growth.
The programme facilitates collaboration and strengthens the impact of research and innovation in developing, supporting, and implementing EU policies while tackling global challenges. It supports creating and better dispersing of excellent knowledge and technologies.
It creates jobs, fully engages the EU’s talent pool, boosts economic growth, promotes industrial competitiveness, and optimizes investment impact within a strengthened European Research Area.
In this sense, ROTATE is perfectly aligned with the scope and outcomes of HORIZON-CL4-TWIN TRANSITION-01-20.

ROTATE’S aim is to provide the mining and quarrying market with profitable and replicable solutions regarding:
Cut-off grade decrease
Drop the cut-off grade related to the production of critical raw materials
Ecofriendly extraction & processing
Minimize the environmental impact (zero emissions, materials, resources, and consumption efficiency) for all the common procedures involved in the extraction and processing in open cast critical raw materials mines and quarries.
Circularity
Deliver circular solutions for waste valorization, creating a symbiosis between the critical raw materials and aggregates industries and the construction sector.
Social acceptance
Provide co-creative strategies to enhance the social acceptance of the open cast extracting industry, supported by a robust policy interaction and a strong clustering network.

Goals
1. To increase efficiency and recovery rate of critical raw materials, raw materials, and water.
2. To reduce the emissions of CO2, dust and noise among others, and to increase efficiency during the extraction and processing.
3. To valorize solid and sludge waste
4. To foster site rehabilitation and biodiversity management:
-
A unified eco-management model to increase the restoration capacity in mines and quarries.
-
Set a range of biodiversity indicators according to the SMART framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound).
5. To develop a multi-parameter platform that will improve the monitoring of the following aspects: emissions, equipment performance, environmental impacts, energy efficiency, risk assessment and biodiversity.
6. To test and validate the aforementioned solutions in 5 pilots across the EU (Spain, France, Portugal, and Norway).
7. To create a powerful and solid network of key stakeholders and end users to expand the project’s scope towards new market opportunities defining a clustering plan to build a collaborative grid that ensures the transfer of knowledge.
8. To increase social awareness by obtaining the Social License to Operate and engaging key stakeholders through several educational initiatives.
9. To ensure the market uptake of these technological solutions defining specific exploitation strategies and business models.
